Design Brief: SKY

A Teacher’s Best Friend: SKY is the next big thing in education.

SKY is a new robot made with artificial intelligence software that can assist teachers in all aspects. Whether it is answering questions or explaining problems, SKY can do it all. As teacher’s prepare students for a limitless future, with out robot, we want students to know that there should not be any limits in education and that the SKY is the limit.

Technology

Customized Search Engine
Any search engine used is based on several complex mathematical formulae used to generate the search results. Sky has the ability to answer questions catered to the school’s curriculum.

Interactive Software
Based on the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing, Sky comes with interactive features, such as a:

  • Conversational Interface (straight word-for-word voice recognition)
    • students and adults are able to interact with Sky vocally.
  • Personal Context Awareness
    • designed to adapt to student preferences over time and personalizes results.
  • Service Delegation
    • access to all apps and parts contained in software, including documents and PDFs.

Speech Software

  • Voice Recognition software
    • algorithms are designed to become more familiar with the students’ word choices and individual speech patterns.
  • Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) & Natural Language Understanding (NLU)
    • Sky can recognize words and phrases, allowing device to quickly respond to requests from students.
  • Text to speech software
    • for PDF and document narration.
  • Software downloading information about official coursework
    • Sky downloads PDFs and documents of textbook and coursework, much like any computer or smartphone.

Built-in Projector

  • DLP® (single chip) – Digital Light Processing
  • projector lense
    • projects documents and pdfs for teachers to display homework answer’s and more

Benefits and Uses

Nowadays, technology plays a very important role in classrooms. Computers and tablets are given to students for use in the classroom and the Internet has become a part of a student’s everyday life.

SKY aims to help teachers and students in the education process. SKY is an all-in-one artificial intelligence robot that will help teacher’s simplify the teaching process and assist students when teachers are busy or absent. Although SKY has similar software to a smartphone, it is an interactive robot that can act as a projector that is catered to a teacher’s specific method of teaching.

Benefits and potential uses of SKY include (but are not limited to):

  • Helping students learn difficult material that they might not understand
  • Answering questions when a teacher is busy helping another student, so that no student is ignored or left behind
  • Providing interactive and educational games to enforce material
  • Displaying educational lessons, when the teacher is absent
    • teachers can record lessons ahead of time, so when they are absent, SKY will be able to display the videos
    • makes sure students do not miss important lessons

Costs

Estimated Cost Breakdown

Sky costs $5000 (calculated per year for software costs):

Academic Materials

  • 1 Textbook per class = $100, so entire coursework = about $500
    • Our company programs Sky with coursework for no additional cost to make Sky more affordable for schools. Schools are required to send copies of their coursework to our company for installation.

Projector

  • DBPOWER T20 LCD Mini Movie Projector – $99.49

Software

  • Nuance Dragon Speech Recognition for Education – $100
  • Natural Language Processing AlchemyAPI – $350 monthly
  • Asana Task Management and Service Delegation Software – $10 monthly

Safety

Although SKY robots are built for educational use, there are some safety concerns associated with having a SKY robot in science labs, near chemicals. If anything falls on the robot, it could be hazardous for the robot and the people nearby.

SKY may also be subject to breakage which is why anyone younger than 5 years of age should not be allowed to touch or play with the robot, as the small broken pieces can become choking hazards.

Despite our goal of lowering the price of SKY robots, broken SKY products may be expensive for schools to fix. However, we do provide a 5-year warranty for schools to fix broken SKY robots.
